"This tile panel was probably part of a wall covering in a room in a palace. The decoration is remarkably bold. The figure of Guanyin (a Buddhist deity) at the upper right is based directly on a Chinese woodcut. The striking black figures represent Brazilian Indians and were added to make the scene more exotic."

"But the most surprising change of his tenure is in the Rijksmuseum’s progressive approach to digital access and copyrights. Anyone anywhere can now do anything they wish with the image of any piece of artwork housed at the Rijksmuseum, without having to pay a cent for it! The results are liberating, and are inspiring a new renaissance of classic artworks in the 21st Century. Best of all, this new approach thrusts new and old artworks into the digital age in ways that give them greater meaning, broader reach and increased utility."
